Home Education (The Home Education Series) - Mason, Charlotte M Review & Synopsis
Synopsis
Charlotte Mason's Original Education Series carefully transcribed and formatted in the layout of the original texts.
Review
Home Education
Home Education consists of six lectures by Charlotte Mason about the raising and educating of young children (up to the age of nine), for parents and teachers. She encourages us to spend a lot of time outdoors, immersed in nature, handling natural objects, and collecting experiences on which to base the rest of their education. She discusses the use of training in good habits such as attention, thinking, imagining, remembering, performing tasks with perfect execution, obedience, and truthfulness, to replace undesirable tendencies in children (and the adults that they grow into). She details how lessons in various school subjects can be done using her approach. She concludes with remarks about the Will, the Conscience, and the Divine Life in the Child. Charlotte Mason was a late nineteenth-century British educator whose ideas were far ahead of her time. She believed that children are born persons worthy of respect, rather than blank slates, and that it was better to feed their growing minds with living literature and vital ideas and knowledge, rather than dry facts and knowledge filtered and pre-digested by the teacher. Her method of education, still used by some private schools and many homeschooling families, is gentle and flexible, especially with younger children, and includes first-hand exposure to great and noble ideas through books in each school subject, conveying wonder and arousing curiosity, and through reflection upon great art, music, and poetry; nature observation as the primary means of early science teaching; use of manipulatives and real-life application to understand mathematical concepts and learning to reason, rather than rote memorization and working endless sums; and an emphasis on character and on cultivating and maintaining good personal habits. Schooling is teacher-directed, not child-led, but school time should be short enough to allow students free time to play and to pursue their own worthy interests such as handicrafts. Traditional Charlotte Mason schooling is firmly based on Christianity, although the method is also used successfully by secular families and families of other religions.

Charlotte Mason (1842-1923) was a British educator who invested her life in improving the quality of children's education. She was founder of the Charlotte Mason College of Education in England and was 100 years ahead of her time in developing an education philosophy that stressed bringing broad and stimulating education to a child in a noncompetitive, biblically based way. Mason's timeless, practical insights and her stress on the importance of the home as a setting for schooling have made her a founding influence in the home schooling movement. Her work has been especially influential in the United States.

Home Education: Annotated Edition
The Annotated Edition of Home Education (Volume 1) includes the full, unabridged text of Charlotte Mason's original work: Home Education. All her words and wisdom have been retained while, at the same time, certain updates have been made for you, the modern reader. Charlotte wrote her six volumes of the Home Education Series from 1885-1921. Her frequent references can leave today's reader a bit frustrated, as she assumed that her readers would understand the context for each person, event, or book that she mentions. Without that context, the wisdom of her words can seem veiled and inaccessible for many readers. Our goal in adding annotations is to highlight Charlotte's text and make it easier to read so that you gain a deeper understanding of her words and meaning. Once you understand the references and the context, it is the key to unlocking the gate. You are no longer bogged down with unfamiliar terminology and references. The words soar. THE ANNOTATED EDITION OF VOLUME 1 FEATURES: The text has been updated with a modern font that is easier to read. American spellings, not British, are used throughout. The original page numbers, as published in earlier editions of Charlotte's volumes, are in the margins so you can easily cross-reference other editions or study guides. Annotations have been added. The annotations provide context to help you better understand Charlotte's frequent references to the people, events, and culture of her time. Gain a deeper understanding of Charlotte Mason's philosophy with the Annotated Editions from A Charlotte Mason Plenary. The Original Home School Series
This is the complete unabridged and authorized edition of the works of turn-of-the-century British educator Charlotte Mason, with a forward by Dr. John Thorley of The Charlotte Mason College. This six-volume set includes over 2400 pages on education, child training and parenting. Recognized as a pioneer in home education and major school reforms, Charlotte Mason's practical methods are as revolutionary today as when they were first written. These books were out of print for over 80 years until Dean & Karen Andreola brought them to America in while returning from a mission s trip in the spring of 1987. A Charlotte Mason educational revival soon followed. Charlotte Mason s writings reflect a lifetime of experience teaching children and training teachers. Her topics are meaty. Her ideas radiate brilliantly in the thoughts of those who take the time to ponder them. With each idea comes a practical how-to "for bringing up children within the educational life." The power of attention, moral character, the discipline of habit, safeguarding a child s curiosity, is a tiny peek at the topics presented. Although Miss Mason began writing in the 1880s, her principles still apply. Today's homeschool parents are seeing first-hand how wonderfully they work. After ten years of intense study and application of Miss Mason s principles with her own children, Karen Andreola wrote A Charlotte Mason Companion: Personal Reflections on the Gentle Art of Learning. Now today's parents can see what a Charlotte Mason education looks like in a contemporary setting while gleaning from its many benefits.
